Android Auto 18 beta hints at upcoming new features and UI improvements
Android Auto 18 beta is now out, and even though there aren't many changes or new features, the source code reveals the new version lays the groundwork for a massive overhaul. We expect an improved UI and a couple of new features.
With the previous Android Auto version, Google introduced the Coolwalk interface that improves navigation and makes information easier to access in an effort to simplify usability while driving with fewer distractions. With Android Auto 18, the company is debuting the Cielo interface, which further refines the UI and offers deeper integration with Gemini.
Cielo is expected to bring more expressive design, glanceable widgets and layouts that adapt to the different infotainment screens inside the car. The interface can also adapt to different screen shapes and orientations.
Take the new Google Sans Flex font, for example. It's designed to adapt to the different infotainment screens by adjusting the weight and width, making text more readable. Two new Quick Settings styles are also expected.
Gemini also gets some love in the new version of Android Auto. It gets broader access to your apps like Gmail, Calendar and even Messages, so you can ask Gemini about stuff.
The source code suggests Google is preparing a new Work Profile, which will likely allow you to manage work-related notifications through Android Auto. This is especially useful for people using one phone as a personal daily driver and for work.
Last but not least, Google has removed more than 200 obsolete resources in an effort to streamline and make the Android Auto experience lighter.
