Ivan, 08 November 2023

EV sales kept climbing in September, nearly 9.5 million plug-in models have found their new owners in 2023 so far, of which over 6.5 million are BEVs. That's around 16% of all cars sold in 2023 and 12% share for the BEVs alone. The data comes from EV-Volumes by way of Jose Pontes.

September saw a record 1,291,077 new passenger plug-in cars sold, of which the majority - 890,000 - were EVs. Breaking down the total numbers by individual models, it's no surprise that Tesla Model Y dominates with 121,258 sales in September. BYD's Yuan Plus (aka Atto 3) is the next EV in the list with 35,378, followed by the BYD Seagull (35,012), the BYD Dolphin (27,240), the GAC Alon Y (27,004), and the Tesla Model 3 with 26,058. The Tesla Model 3 sales were slower due to the introduction of the Model 3 Highland in China.

Global EV sales hit record in September, will top 10 million for the entire year

When it comes to BEVs Tesla was the leader in overall sales in the period Q1-Q3 with 1,323,868 sales or 20.1% of the entire market. That's an increase over the same period last year of 1.6 percentage points.

BYD shipped the second most EVs with 1,048,513 to grab 15.9% of the market (up from 11.9%). Volkswagen Group accounts for 510,204 EV sales - 7.7% market share (a modest increase from 7.4%). SAIC (SAIC-GM-Wuling) has 491,633 (7.5% share vs 8.9% last year), and GAC completes the top 5 with 373,718 for a 5.7% share.

If we factor in the plug-in hybrids and EREVs it's BYD on top and with a significant margin too. The Chinese company had a 21.9% market share with its just over 2 million cars sold with Tesla second with a 14% share and VW in third on 7.2%.
