Goodyear unveils ElectricDrive 2 tire at CES 2024

Max McDee, 10 January 2024

At the 2024 CES and Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. unveiled a new tire that is both greener and longer lasting. The Goodyear ElectricDrive 2 tire is specifically designed to cater to the needs of electric vehicle owners.

The ElectricDrive 2 is an all-season EV tire, boasting lower rolling resistance and SoundComfort Technology to reduce interior vehicle noise. This tire is slated to hit the market in May 2024, with availability in the United States and a range of sizes designed to fit consumer electric sedans and SUVs, including popular models like the Tesla Model Y, Model 3, and Model S, as well as the Ford Mustang Mach-E.

Goodyear also announced a collaboration with ZF, a global leader in vehicle systems and industrial technology. They worked on Goodyear SightLine, which integrates tire intelligence technologies with vehicle motion control software. This suite of tire intelligence technologies is now part of the ZF cubiX ecosystem, a scalable vehicle motion control software that coordinates all aspects of vehicle dynamics.

The idea is to feed tire and road data to the car's computer, so it can enhance the driving experience with improved comfort, control, and efficiency.

The first company to take advantage of this is Gatik - an autonomous middle-mile B2B logistics fleet. Gatik's autonomous fleet, equipped with Goodyear’s Endurance RSA tires with SightLine technology, will use the enhanced data gathering to improve the safety and uptime of its fleet operations. In 2024, Gatik plans to implement intelligent tire solutions across a significant portion of its autonomous fleets in the United States and Canada.

Goodyear also joined forces with the Netherlands Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO) to boost ABS performance. Goodyear and TNO demonstrated an improved ABS system equipped with tire-specific information that reduces braking distances by as much as 68.9 inches.

Lastly, Goodyear announced a collaboration with TDK Corp. to develop a robust tire sensing system by combining TDK's software, sensor, and electronic components with Goodyear's tire development and intelligent solutions.
