Google announces Android Automotive OS is going open-source
Google announced the open-sourcing of its Android Automotive OS. The platform that powers a number of vehicle already offers deeper integration with vehicles and control more functions beyond just a screen, and to reduce costs and development times for automakers.
No to be confused with Android Auto, AAOS is actually the car's own brain and controls everything on board - seats, AC, driving functions and all sorts of features and hardware. In a way, Google wants to directly compete with Huawei and its in-car Harmony OS solution.
With AAOS SDV, the tech giant wants to cut costs and development times for car makers. The system adopts a universal signal catalog, so that software developers can work on a certain feature before even the hardware is ready.
Now, developers use different programming techniques to control various modules and hardware inside the car. With AAOS SDV, all carmakers and part suppliers will use a universal command, which in turn will reduce platform development costs and times.
