Hyundai Insteroid is a gaming-inspired electric beast

After a quick teaser, Hyundai officially unveiled the Insteroid, a concept electric vehicle that draws heavy inspiration from the world of video games. The Insteroid is a direct evolution of the previous RN24 rolling lab drift concept. It pushes the boundaries of conventional EV design, resulting in a vehicle that is as visually striking as it is conceptually ambitious.

The Insteroid's most prominent feature is its wild, wide body. The exaggerated, boxy fenders protrude from the car's main body, giving it a powerful, almost cartoonish stance. The rear fenders extend so far that the wheels appear to sit outside the original bodywork.

Additional aerodynamic enhancements include a deep front bumper with an integrated splitter, saw-tooth slats above the front wheels reminiscent of the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, and a massive spoiler on the rear hatch. The overall aesthetic evokes a blend of 1980s Group B rally cars, like the wild MG Metro 6R4 and the unforgettable Suzuki Escudo, which conquered Pikes Peak.

The motorsport-inspired theme continues on the inside. A full roll cage and bucket seats point to the vehicle's performance-oriented nature, and the absence of any carpets reinforces its stripped-down, track-ready character. The interior also uses elements from the gaming and tuning scene, and playful Space Invaders graphics add a touch of whimsy. The Insteroid truly is a blend of the worlds of high-performance driving and digital entertainment.

Unfortunately, Hyundai has not disclosed specific power figures. The Insteroid's aggressive styling suggests a performance level far exceeding that of the standard 97-hp Inster EV. Speculation points to the potential use of the Ioniq 5 N's dual-motor drivetrain, which delivers 650 horsepower. This setup, previously used in the RN24 concept, would be a fitting match for the Insteroid's radical design.

Eduardo Ramírez, Chief Designer at Hyundai Design Europe, explained that the Insteroid project was an exercise in "unrestrained creativity," drawing inspiration from video games to create an "emotional and engaging vision" of the Hyundai brand.

The Insteroid is unlikely to enter mass production in its current form, but its design elements - obviously toned down a bit - could influence future sporty Inster variants. The recent confirmation of small-scale production of the Renault 5 Turbo 3E may encourage Hyundai to reconsider the Insteroid's production potential.
