The Leapmotor D19 brings flagship power, 447 miles range, and an oxygen supply

Chinese automaker Leapmotor officially unveiled its new flagship - the D19, marking the brand's latest effort to push the boundaries for large electric cars. The D19 is a full-sized, six-seat SUV built on the company's dedicated D platform.

Leapmotor will offer consumers two versions: a pure battery EV and an extended-range EV (EREV). This way, the company targets buyers who want zero-emission driving but also need flexibility and worry-free driving for long trips.

Unfortunately, potential buyers will have to wait a little while, as deliveries for the Leapmotor D19 won't start until the first half of 2026. While the official price remains a secret, the company indicated the luxurious SUV will target a price point around RMB 300,000, which converts to approximately $42,100.

The Leapmotor D19 makes a powerful statement with its size and design. Following the company's "Technology Natural Aesthetics 2.0" design language, the SUV stretches more than 204.7 inches long, stands nearly 79 inches wide, and has a wheelbase exceeding 122 inches. It is undeniably a true full-size SUV.

Up front, a clever three-stage headlight cluster can project images, while the lower grille smartly opens or closes on its own based on what the environment demands. The vehicle's advanced technology is clear to see, with a lidar sensor sitting right on the roof for advanced driver aids. At the back, the enormous taillight bar spans nearly 79 inches (77.1 inches exactly) and shines bright with 11,025 individual LED units. Buyers will have five colors to choose from: green, white, silver, gray, and black.

The EV variant of the D19 pushes performance limits well beyond what most drivers expect from a large SUV. This model uses a 1,000V high-voltage platform, which allows for incredibly quick charging times. Its powertrain delivers 540 kilowatts, or 724 horsepower. That kind of power lets the heavy SUV sprint from zero to 62 mph in less than three seconds - performance that rivals some of the world's most exotic sports cars.

Powering this speed demon is a large 115 kWh battery pack, giving the D19 a CLTC-rated range of 447 miles on a full charge. When the vehicle needs a quick refill, the advanced fast-charging system can add 217 miles of range in just 15 minutes.

For drivers who want peace of mind without needing to find a charger immediately, the EREV version uses an engine as a range extender. This variant runs on an 800V high-voltage system and has a total system power output of 400 kilowatts, or 536 horsepower. The EREV still accelerates quickly, hitting 62 mph in under five seconds.

The battery pack is huge at 80.3 kWh, which Leapmotor says is the largest ever installed in an extended-range EV. It provides a pure electric driving range of 311 miles before the gasoline engine even needs to start. Both the EV and EREV models share a world-first battery innovation from supplier CATL, which blends lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium materials into a single cell.

Leapmotor did not hold back on the digital technology packed inside the D19. The vehicle uses dual Qualcomm Snapdragon 8797 chipsets, delivering a combined computing power of 1280 TOPS. One chip handles the intelligent cockpit, running the navigation and entertainment displays, and the second is entirely dedicated to running the advanced driving assistance systems.

As if those specs weren't enough, the Leapmotor D19 carries a feature you rarely see outside a hospital: the industry's first onboard oxygen generator. This system can pump out up to 8 liters of oxygen per minute. It might sound like a strange addition for a family SUV - unless someone in the family happens to be an aspiring astronaut. But it makes total sense when considering the latest Chinese trend of traveling to high-altitude regions, such as Tibet, where drivers and passengers often need a little help breathing the thin air.

The D19 promises to deliver a lot of luxury and technology for its target price tag. Its size suggests a spacious and comfortable ride for six people. The blend of extreme performance in the pure EV and the extended, worry-free range in the EREV gives the Leapmotor D19 a strong competitive edge, and with the company working alongside global giant Stellantis, there is a small chance this flagship may eventually become available to consumers outside of the Chinese market.
