Tesla to introduce self-service test drives at Destination Chargers

Max McDee, 23 January 2024

Tesla has come up with a new strategy to entice potential buyers, one that involves letting customers experience the thrill of driving a Tesla without the pressure of a sales representative looming over them. Say hello to self-serve demo drives.

Tesla has recently reached out to property owners who have installed a Tesla Destination Charger at their establishments, offering them the opportunity to host self-serve demo drives right on their premises. Tesla's Destination Chargers are Level 2 EV charging stations, typically found in hotel parking lots across the United States.

Under this initiative, Tesla will supply up to four demo vehicles per site, manage the scheduling of appointments, and handle the maintenance of these vehicles at no additional cost to the property owners. Tesla claims that sites currently offering self-serve test drives witness more than 35 demo drives each week. It's a win-win situation – property owners get to make the most of their investment in Tesla Destination Charging, while potential customers get an unpressured opportunity to test drive Tesla's lineup.

Potential customers can schedule a demo drive appointment, and they'll be given access to a Tesla Model S, Model 3, Model X, or Model Y without the need for a sales representative by their side. Tesla employs a virtual key system that's stored on the driver's smartphone, ensuring that everything is controlled remotely. It's a seamless and innovative way to introduce potential buyers to the world of Tesla.

Tesla to introduce self-serve demo drives

In a market saturated with options, Tesla's decision to take the unconventional route of offering self-serve demo drives at Destination Charger locations is a bold move. This approach not only sets Tesla apart but also aligns with the broader trend of automakers focusing on customer experience. As the EV market continues to expand and mature, these unique initiatives may prove instrumental in winning over new customers.
