The first all-electric BMW iX5 is now official, comes alongside four other powertrain options

BMW just announced the X5 series SUV, and it now comes in five different drive options. You have the usual petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid, but they are now joined by the first-ever fully-electric iX5 and the iX5 Hydrogen. The latter will come at a later date, though. The only thing we know about the hydrogen version so far is the 385 miles range.

Anyway, back to the first-ever electric X5, the iX5, which, like the rest, is based on the Neue Klasse platform and offers a somewhat familiar design. We've seen the same design concept debut with the iX3, but the iX5 takes things up a notch with distinctive double X-shaped headlights, hidden door handles in the pillars and inconspicuous window seals.

BMW announced only one version of its iX5, but more will follow after the iX5 60 AWD hits the streets in early 2027. The 60 AWD version will draw power from two electric motors (it's an all-wheel drive after all) with a combined output of 570 hp (804 Nm). The vehicle can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

This configuration will also offer the biggest battery in a BMW - 144 kWh. The iX5 is said to offer a 435 miles cruising range, as per EPA data. That's quite impressive, but we are wondering what's going to be the weight of that thing.

Naturally, the SUV is built on an 800V system, which supports 460 kW DC fast charging, taking the battery from 10% to 80% in just 22 minutes. In other words, a 10-minute charge will give you 170 miles extra range if you are in a hurry. Bidirectional charging is also supported.

The interior seems like a big departure from the BMW aesthetic, and you get the controversial iX3 steering wheel by default, unless you opt for the M Sport Professional package.

The central infotainment screen measures 17.9" in diagonal, while a long digital display that runs from pillar to pillar sits behind the infotainment display. The 14.6-inch screen for the front passenger that you see in the pictures is optional.

The 50e xDrive PHEV and iX5 60 AWD configurations will debut in early 2027, starting at $78,950 and $81,250, respectively. For context, the base X5 40 starts at $71,250.
