Updated SAIC VW ID.3 and ID.4 models hit Chinese showrooms

Max McDee, 04 January 2024

SAIC Volkswagen, having first introduced the ID.3 to the Chinese market in 2021, is back with a 2024 refresh for both the ID.3 and ID.4 models. The updated ID.3, now available in two configurations, comes with a price point of RMB 163,888 ($23,000) and RMB 171,388 ($24,000) respectively. That is a rather sizable increase from its previous starting price of $16,600.

There are changes in the exterior of the new ID.3 - a closed front grille, a fresh style of LED headlights, and an aerodynamically enhanced profile. While the car maintains its compact size with dimensions at 167.8 inches/70 inches/61.7 inches (length/width/height) and a wheelbase of 108.9 inches, the interior is surprisingly roomy for passengers.

The ID.3 comes in one of four exterior colors and two interior options. The minimalist (or sparse if you like) interior design features a compact full LCD instrument panel and a floating multimedia screen with Apple CarPlay support. Integrated electronic shift controls are designed to optimize the available storage space in the center console.

The Chinese ID.3 uses the familiar permanent magnet synchronous motor generating 125kW of power and a peak torque of 229 lb-ft. The vehicle boasts a CLTC range of 280 miles, courtesy of its 52.8kWh battery. However, it's hard to overlook that the new Tesla Model 3 rear-wheel drive outshines it with an impressive 377 miles range. Of course, the WLTP ratings for both vehicles are much closer to each other (and reality) - 270 miles and 319 miles respectively.

Moving to the new ID.4, SAIC VW offers a broader range of four price points, spanning from RM 195,000 ($27,000) to RMB 283,000 ($38,000). The projected operating mileage for the ID.4, according to the ever-optimistic CLTC system, varies from 264 miles to 373 miles, with power options of 125kW, 150kW, and a hefty 230kW. Further details and features are expected to be unveiled on the official site soon.

In a market where EV options are expanding rapidly, SAIC Volkswagen's pricing strategy for the updated ID.3 and ID.4 models is somewhat puzzling. Despite subtle exterior tweaks and a commendable interior, the question looms – is the price hike justified? Hasn’t VW learned anything from its struggles in the European and US markets? We won’t have to wait too long to know the answers - customers will vote with their wallets really soon. If the smaller siblings follow the abysmal sales performance of the ID.7 - Volkswagen will have some hard truths to face.
