BMW to bring Level 2 advanced driver assistance to German cities in 2027

Ro, 02 November 2026

BMW Group today announced its plans to bring its Level 2 advanced driver assistance to German cities in 2027. The company said the system completed all safety tests and has been given the green light by international and internal regulators.

So far, BMW has been offering its Motorway and City Assistants to customers in Germany and is about to expand the functionality of the City Assistant. In addition to the automated stopping and starting at traffic lights, the system will soon gain the ability to help you turn, change lanes, identify right-of-way situations and navigate roundabouts. BMW says that for the first time next year, BMW owners will be able to enjoy a partially automated, BMW Maps-navigated commute from the motorway, through the countryside and into the city.

BMW also introduces the BMW Symbiotic Drive, which is an interactive and cooperative way to navigate the vehicle with the help of various ADAS-like systems. Once active, the driver can work with the system by accelerating, steering or braking, without disengaging Symbiotic Drive.

The system constantly monitors the driver's steering behavior and gaze so the system can provide useful and timely assistance depending on the road conditions and scenarios. The Panoramic iDrive enabled by the pillar-to-pillar screen introduced with the new BMW iX3 and iX5 models makes these features a tad easier to use. All of the Symbiotic Drive's prompts are always visible and easy to follow.

BMW says the new iX3, iX4 and all variants of the BMW X5 and 7 Series (including the iX5 and i7) come with the necessary equipment as standard.

BMW's push to deliver ADAS to its customers in Europe follows Mercedes' footsteps, although the latter is already offering Level 4 autonomous driving in some regions.
