How is this bad that the government wants to promote a certain industry for their goals? Why did they not invest heavily into petrol cars? Aren't other countries giving tax benefits for being evs too? but thats not worth criticizing because they aren't doing too good. But are they engaged in monopolistic practice? how odd

Tesla is not the only manufacturer that sells Chinese made EVs in Canada.
Polestar and Volvo sell models made in China. (Also, there are also non-EV cars made in China sold in Canada, like some Buick and Lincoln models, but there's no mention on tariffs for ICE cars...)

The reason why China is more successful is because auto industry there has been more forward thinking. Unlike the old laggards here who feel EV is just a hype and roll out expensive EVs made with old outdated architecture, waste the govt. subsidies and barely spend on RnD. Chinese manufacturers keep updating and innovating, its not subsidies alone which has given them the lead.

Being a Canadian, it seems that Trudeau's policies are quite against a globalized Canadian economy. As a consumer I would like to be able to freely choose if I want a Chinese EV or a locally produced EV. Creating entry barriers actually encourages monopolistic business practices in Canada. Ultimately, a 100% tariff is paid by the consumer and goes into the government's pocket - the manufacturer in question (i.e BYD) doesn't really have much of an impact in that transaction (apart from the fact that they lose potential sales because of the tariff). If we really want to encourage EV adoption, we have to think ahead and find a way to encourage healthy competition in the EV space - just as we do for ICE cars.

Both shameless & hypocritical. They can't be bothered to improve their own local products, so instead they try to ban and impose tariffs on cheaper, imported products.

If something imported is still cheaper and better than your local stuff, YOU are the problem. You need to improve. Don't try to pull an Apple and ban everything else.

As others have said, the consumers are the ones who will suffer from this move.

Tariffs only hurt the end consumer as the consumer needs to pay more for the same unit that can be bought cheap.

Govs play eco-geo policies and citizens pay the ticket price.
Kindly put 100% tariffs on other electronic devices that also comes from china (devices like mobile, laptop, pc, fridge, heater, tv etc. and more of those list).
