Rivian is firmly rejecting Apple CarPlay in its electric cars, choosing instead to build an independent, voice-activated cabin experience powered by advanced artificial intelligence.

Both the microphones & speakers are in/near the driver's seat/headrest so it works even when others are talking or when there's music playing.

But I still agree with you that there should be some sort of manual, physical controls which you can always fall back to should the voice assistant prove finicky.

Relying SOLELY on it is asking for trouble. All this is without even mentioning the absurd costs & worst-case scenario, a subscription just to use your car.

Here we go again.
What one should read here is that they want anti-consumer practices, stuff as many subscriptions as possible, and brick your vehicle in any case of their inconvenience.

voice commands are never the best way to interact with a vehicle. as a driver, you mostly interact with the vehicle during a conversation going in the cabin with many people. do you have to ask everyone to shut up every time you need to toggle something on/off? it is even more challenging when you have kids. they interact with the voice commands like a game or they sleep in the car. in both situations, it is impossible to use voice commands. the solution is physical buttons, switches, knobs with tactile feedback like we have had for a 100 years. voice control is nice to have but, it cannot be the primary interaction with the vehicle.

regarding android auto/carplay; this is the smoothest car interface you can have. you have all the apps already installed, many settings customised and every account is logged in from day 1. why do you need to set everything up in the car all over again?
