05 October 2026
Britain is at a crossroads as tariffs on Chinese EVs will force a trade-off between consumer prices and the survival of domestic manufacturing tied to Europe.

NickGurr, 11 hours agoI find it ridiculous that governments keep telling people to switch to EVs, then consider putt... moreisn't it more ridiculous to discuss only the symptoms?

i've typed this before many many many times..
the drop in quality of life is due to illegal migrants
where do these useless sacks of cells come from?
well, gee golly..following americans in their desert safaris

which illegal migrants cured cancer?
created fusion reactor?
solved hunger?

I find it ridiculous that governments keep telling people to switch to EVs, then consider putting huge tariffs on the cheaper ones. I understand wanting to protect local jobs, but making cars more expensive doesn’t make people any better able to afford them. Protecting an industry should also mean helping it build cars people can actually buy.

People aren’t always refusing to change. Often, they just don’t have the money. If buying an EV is too expensive and keeping your old car keeps getting more expensive too, what exactly are you supposed to do? For many of us, the only realistic option is to keep what we have and look after it for as long as possible.

With rent, food, energy and everything else taking up so much of an ordinary salary, a new car is already out of reach. You can’t keep demanding that people change while pricing them out of the alternatives. Make the switch affordable, and people will have a real choice.

Hallelujah!
Unfortunately, the criminals, sitting in the managemnt levels of the European manufacturer brought us in this situation: keep feeding them, or ruining the whole industry. I mean 'the whole', as it is not only the automotive industry that would collapse.
The tragedy is that those pricks, continue to dismantle the knowledge and skills built over decades, 'because it's cheeper to produce' elsewhere...on the short term and on paper, may be. On the long, it isnt.

  • lower taxes

Tariffs are one more political excuse to trick voters into accepting higher taxes.

Better to put tarrifs on China and strengthen EU. It would best to avoid the genocidal, slave labour Chinese state.

But this will have to come with stick and carrot legislation for EU automakers to promote innovation and lowering of prices.
