Automatic Emergency Braking tested by AAA with surprising results

30 September 2022
The results of study carried out by AAA were less than stellar with AEB systems inconsistent and confusing at times.

Sort by:

  • False Positive

AEB is dangerous. Tried on three different mainstream systems. All were terrifying and each nearly deadly. Entering unprotected turns into traffic, objects in the breakdown lane, cross-traffic, reversing, all fail to operate in a safe, predictable, and consistent manner. Instead AEB caused a dramatic loss of control and power. Particularly stressful when one is left limping when attempting to accelerate away from an impending problem.

AEB systems need more real-time information as to how it determines when to intervene, and granular control by the user. Worse is pretty much all dealer may unknowingly reset every setting each time they service the vehicle. And the false positives start all over again...

AEB will not be user worthy by 2029. Yet another nag.
